A Century of Sport

How 2020 will look?

We are planning various sporting events throughout the year to celebrate the Welwyn Garden City centenary – clearly, rugby and football in the winter months and cricket and tennis in the summer and indoor sporting events can be spread over the year and so on.We will have a fantastic celebration with aWeek of Sport starting on Saturday the 28th June and ending on Sunday the 5th July with different sporting events on every day.

Many Clubs will be taking part

We have invited as many Sports Clubs in the Town as possible to take part and, so far, 40 have agreed to do so. Many have already suggested possible ways in which they will celebrate the Centenary; others are discussing amongst themselves and, encouragingly, with other Clubs. The sports that we are working with so far are:

Schools will also be involved

All of the Primary and Secondary schools in the Town want to be involved. Their annualSports Week will feature many opportunities for the students to celebrate the Centenary and there will also be events during the year with several inter-school competitions. The schools are also keen to work with Clubs wherever possible and this should provide an opportunity for Clubs to widen their membership and help develop a new generation of local sports people. If your Club would be interested in this, please let us know.

The Petit Tour

Already well-established we hope that this large and enjoyable cycling event will be held in Parkway and the Town Centre on Sunday the 28th June. As usual there will be many other sporting attractions on the day.

Gosling and Finesse will host many events

Discussions with Better/Gosling and Finesse at Stanborough Lakes have resulted in us anticipating holding a number of events, throughout the year and during the Week of Sport. These events will include particular sports and also the opportunity for residents and others to come along to try out the facilities on offer or simply to watch everyone enjoy themselves.

Which Sports Club is the Eldest?

Many of our Sports Clubs have been around for quite a long time, and one or two were started in the 1920s. Some research is going on to determine which Club is the oldest and two of the contenders are Welwyn Garden City Golf Club, who will be celebrating their own centenary in 2023, and Dellcott Tennis Club.who may well run them close in the oldest Club stakes. It is clear that our Town had sport in mind from Day one. Does your Club have an ancient pedigree?

Golf

Ideas from Welwyn Garden City Golf Club include inter-club tournaments for both Senior and Junior players and an Open Day to let potential players see what playing golf is all about.
