Sport for All

Welwyn Garden City, a town that was designed for healthy living has a whole range of sports clubs and sporting organisations that have inspired a number of home-grown internationally acclaimed sports personalities. Some of the sports clubs were started in the 1920s and the town now has over 50 clubs and some impressive communal sports facilities at Gosling Sports Park, Stanborough Lakes, Panshanger Moneyhole Playing Fields and elsewhere. These facilities include one of only four velodromes in the UK, water sports park, an athletic track, four tennis clubs, three golf courses, several bowls clubs as well as football clubs, cricket clubs, a rugby club and many more.

We aim to facilitate and coordinate the celebration of a century of sport in Welwyn Garden City. All sports clubs, sporting organisations, schools and youth groups in the town  have been invited to arrange events throughout 2020 with a focussed Week of Sport in the Summer which we hope will encourage increased participation, inclusivity and the development of sporting success for the future generations. Above all, we want people to enjoy themselves by taking part in sporting activities.

Our Group has experience across a number of sports and we are always willing to discuss and bring on board anyone who wants to join in and help. If you would like to do so, or if you are not sure whether your sport or Club is involved, contact John Beech and Eric Walsby on:

sport@wgccentenary.org

We will be keeping everyone updated with our progress by providing information on these pages, newsletters, articles in the press and by making good use of social media.
