Centenary plans gain momentum at public meeting

Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation

A lively public meeting took place on Tuesday to share latest exciting plans for Welwyn Garden City’s Centenary celebrations in 2020 with local residents and organisations.

A huge variety of events is planned to celebrated the town’s 100thbirthday, ranging from the event kick off on 31 December 2019 with a procession of lanterns, a tour of light installations, fireworks, and the lighting of the beacon, to a festival of music and performing arts and a garden at the Chelsea Flower Show which will be relocated as a permanent feature in the town.

14 signature projects which are well underway and the 14 teams of volunteers were on hand to share latest news and plans.  Over 15 sports clubs have already planned tournaments, schools actively involved with a photographic competition, tree and bulb planting and a carnival taking place on July 11, 2020.

Foundation Chair Peter Waine said: ‘2020 will be a really exciting year for Welwyn Garden City and we are looking forward to everyone in the town celebrating Ebenezer Howard’s vision of a marriage of town and country.  The whole Centenary programme is being privately funded through fundraising and sponsorship.   Welwyn Garden City will be good for the future with a past worth celebrating.’
